[AstroPy] Capturing pyfits warnings

Please excuse this non-Python proposal, but would it be worth 
considering FTOOLS 
<http://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/docs/software/ftools/ftools_menu.html> (in 
particular fverify 
<http://heasarc.nasa.gov/lheasoft/ftools/fhelp/fverify.txt>) to 
accomplish this task?  -- jv
