Abhi -- For a relatively simple IDL task like this, you may just want
to take a peek at the source and look for equivalent functions in
scipy/numpy.  Perhaps the combination of something like

numpy.linspace
numpy.interp

and one of

scipy.ndimage.gaussian_filter
scipy.signal.convolve
scipy.signal.fftconvolve

would achieve what you want....
