I tried this and just end up in the at the ordinary shellprompt i.e. no pdb.

That error on import smells like a circular import problem.

I have tried adding "import IPython.Release" at the top of the iptest
script and that line runs just fine so it seems that something happens
in iptest.main that makes this failure.
