Yes. It's the "return value" of %ed, and hence rendered in a repr format.

I've been thinking of a fun hack; perhaps we should derive a
"hiddenstr" from str and return strings we don't want to display (or
display in a heavily abbreviated form) as that type. Then nobody apart
from ipython display hook will know better, thinking it's a plain old
string.
