Honestly, now that I've seen the arguments, I think I might be alright with the mailing lists. But the biggest problem is that they silently discard messages. This is a very bad thing to do, since you've wasted the effort of writing your message and you may be confused about why you aren't getting a response. This happened to me and probably happened to a lot of new users.
The newsgroup should at least tell you what you're doing wrong if you've already subscribed.
