Record arrays also cause problems, i.e.

import numpy as N

rec = N.array([(1.0, 2.0, 3.0), (5.0, 4.0, 3.0)],
              dtype=[('x', '<f8'), ('y', '<f8'), ('z', '<f8')])
rec['x'].clip(0,0.5)
