Reason for deprecation might be exposed by this?

PEP 3141 discusses this obliquely in the discussion of the 
Number ABC:

Until NumPy can justify its choice with reference to either
Python behavior or a C standard, might it be best not to
promise anything? (E.g., raise an exception.)
