I think so, for example in C I can do:

fscanf(fp, "%Lf %Lf %Lf", &x, &y, &z);

where x,y,z are "long doubles".

The equivalent for regular doubles would be:

fscanf(fp, "%lf %lf %lf", &x, &y, &z);
