Confirmed on Windows. The crash is in line 816 of mapping.c:

         PyErr_Format(PyExc_ValueError,
                      "field named %s not found.",
                      PyString_AsString(index));

This works with Python 3.x:

         PyErr_Format(PyExc_ValueError,
                      "field named %S not found.",
                      index);
