thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for - together with 

c.TerminalIPythonApp.exec_lines = ['import sys',
                                   'import numpy as np',
                                   'import matplotlib as mpl',
                                   'import matplotlib.pyplot as plt']

etc. to have the shortcuts.
