 Tracing back further, the code generator uses

 'logical_not' :
     Ufunc(1, 1, None,
           'returns not x elementwise.',
           TD(noobj, out='?'),
           TD(M, f='logical_not', out='?'),
           ),

 I assume the M means an object with a non standard method, the question is
 what out='?' means. If I remove it the function starts to work.
