 Heh!

 It's the matrix __getitem__ problem. The subroutine discover_dimensions
 recurses down through the dimensions and does:

 {{{
 e = PySequence_GetItem(s,i);
 }}}

 To index through the items to descend in. And guess what, the next level
 finds a (row) length of one. I expect this problem shows up other places
 too.
