 I will have a test run of the latest numpy tomorrow morning.  If the crash
 is still there, I will compile numpy with -g and enable the debug printf
 as described.

 I can confirm that it is not leftovers from an old build.  (My work flow
 involves creating a tar file of the sources and extracting/installing it
 on several machines.)
