 I wonder if the answer to this wouldn't be another "lame hack" in pip
 itself to support the numpy case?  Not that that would be ideal.  Has this
 been brought up with the pip developers at all for ideas?

 Sorry to resurrect this issue, but it's been bugging me for a while.  I'd
 be willing to take a stab at it if necessary.
