Thanks for your prompt reply.
I am running W7 64b and indeed something must be wrong with my python2.6
installation; I had tried the 2.6 versions from both python.org and
activestate (numpy always from the numpy.org site), both to no avail; I see
now that somehow I also got 2 python2.6 entries in the registry. Anyway, I
installed python2.7+numpy and python3.2+numpy and both work.

So although 2.6 still doesn't work on my system, I am happy to be able to
continue.
