Another data point.  Works for me too under Linux.

    In [1]: 'C-c'
    KeyboardInterrupt
    In [1]: import gui_thread
    In [2]: 'C-c'
    KeyboardInterrupt
    In [2]: gui_thread.start()
    In [3]: 'C-c'
    KeyboardInterrupt
