I'm a bit behind on my mail, but have another datum here.  I have ATLAS 
and LAPACK built with Absoft.  Even though newcore doesn't contain any 
Fortran code per se, it does link to libf77blas, and if I build newcore 
without a config_fc command specifying Absoft, I get an undefined Absoft 
symbol at lapack_lite load time.
