It is not a horrible experience. It involves a little bookkeeping, but  
it's entirely manageable. Our collected instructions for handling  
branches of FiPy (derived largely from the SVN book at red-bean) is at http://matforge.org/fipy/browser/trunk/documentation/ADMINISTRATA.txt
