 Hello wnbell,

 you are right. The performance are comparable.

 I test it once again with sp*sp where as sp=spdiags([-ones(n) 2*ones(n)
 -ones(n)],[-1,0,1],N,N,format='csc').

 Sorry!

 The problem was that I test the performance with random matrices with 60%
 non zero entrys and not with a deterministic example.
