 Sorry, this was a mistake.  I didn't go back and check the original MAT
 file, which has the problem struct and other data besides.  See attached
 file "bug.txt".  If the top-level struct is just one of the objects in a
 MAT file, loadmat rejects the entire struct because of a field that is a
 struct containing a field that is a function handle. If the struct is
 alone, it seems to handle everything but the one structure field that
 contains the function handle field.
