Comment:

 Bit of a contradiction in terms, but there are indeed 1-bit greyscale
 images.

 Looking into this a bit more, PIL implements the {{{__array_interface__}}}
 attribute for interaction with NumPy (contributed by Travis O.). PIL has a
 "numpy" branch, the last commit on it was
 http://bitbucket.org/effbot/pil-2009-raclette/changeset/ac9410828fed with
 commit message "Disabled mode 1 support for array interface.". That commit
 is 16 months old. So it looks like a PIL bug for sure. And at the present
 rate of PIL updates, it may be fixed in 2014 or so.

 Closing this ticket as invalid, if you disagree and think it's a numpy bug
 after all, please open a new ticket in the numpy tracker.
