 I think the problem goes deeper: what does it mean to take the maximum
 over a set after subtracting the mask?  Also, intuitively it seems strange
 to erode an image of zeros and get values smaller than zero.  Can the
 definition for binary and grey-level erosion differ so much that a whole
 new way of understanding is required?  I wasn't sure whether the sum in
 the Wikipedia article and Serra's paper refer to an actual sum, but it
 looks like it does.  I'll have a colleague from the field visiting this
 week, then I can discuss the issue in some more detail and see if I can
 come up with a more satisfying answer.
