 @rgommers: Thanks for the link, and thanks so much for taking the time to
 look into this.

 The gfortran version you linked is the same as the one used by homebrew.

 However I realized after reading the forum you linked, that I had gcc
 ->llvm-gcc-4.2. I simply exported CC=gcc-4.2 and CXX=g++-4.2, then ran pip
 install scipy.

 Scipy still fails 7 tests, but it didn't crash! Does that make this issue
 an llvm bug? Or just a general compatibility issue for scipy?
