 I tried doing this, but I got the same error because SciPy checks to make
 sure that it's been compiled before installing. As my original build log
 shows, when some of the Fortran libraries are compiled, there are a bunch
 of undefined references to various Python symbols when attempting to link
 the shared libraries (and I encounter a lot of warnings when trying to
 compile code earlier).

 As for the other issue, my prefix is specified in ~/.pydistutils.cfg:
 {{{
 [DEFAULT]
 prefix = $HOME/local
 }}}
 Every part of the install process works correctly for NumPy 1.6.0, and I
 have installed that already.
