#1788: calling scipy.optimize.minimize with a sparse jacobian fails

     Type:  defect          |      Status:  new
 Priority:  normal          |   Milestone:  Unscheduled
Component:  scipy.optimize  |     Version:  0.11.0

Comment(by furiousd):

 Just realized that I misread/misunderstood the minimize function: for
 minimizing SCALAR functions of multiple variables. I am trying to use it
 for N-dimensional root finding. The difference being that sparse
 Jacobians in the latter case are necessary for large-scale problems, but
 the Jacobian for a scalar-valued function is much smaller!

 So, maybe this is technically a bug but the impact is less than I had
 originally expected...
