 Sorry about the slow reply. Have been afflicted by problems with the ATLAS
 build of Lapack (a hang in slartg is always the first visible problem).
 I made your suggested changes though, and they got me a lot further
 through the scipy tests, when building with llvm-gcc. Running the tests
 with verbose=3, I think the relevant test successes are:-

 test_definition (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_djbfft (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_n_argument_real (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_definition (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_definition_real (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_djbfft (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_random_complex (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_random_real (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_size_accuracy (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_axes_argument (test_basic.TestFftn) ... ok
 test_definition (test_basic.TestFftn) ... ok

 Yes, this fixes it. I just reverted the changes, rebuilt and installed
 _fftpack.so, and results for the same tests:-

 test_definition (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_djbfft (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_n_argument_real (test_basic.TestDoubleFFT) ... ok
 test_definition (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... FAIL
 test_definition_real (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... ok
 test_djbfft (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... FAIL
 test_random_complex (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... FAIL
 test_random_real (test_basic.TestDoubleIFFT) ... Python-dev(88753) malloc:
 *** error for object 0x10520d6f8: incorrect checksum for freed object -
 object was probably modified after being freed.
 *** set a breakpoint in malloc_error_break to debug

 Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.
 0x00007fff927e2d46 in __kill ()

 So, those are good fixes. Thanks! If I get a fully working build, I'll
 report back. I'm definitely getting some problems with ATLAS Lapack
 though, which propagate through to the scipy tests. I think it worked when
 I manually built Lapack, rather than getting ATLAS to build it, but I need
 to confirm that.
