 My installation behaves the same as yours with the code you provided.

 Hopefully I will be able to create a repro for my observation. Anyway, I
 am absolutely certain that I observed fval being of integer type although
 f() only returned floats. That's why I was looking up the documentation
 again and was surprised to see it documented.

 Besides from having a repro or not -- in which cases would that behavior
 make sense?
