Yes sarge. I'm running the latest kernel 2.6.14.3 (kernel.org) in case 
this info is of any importance. My CPU is a Athlon XP 2400+ so I 
shouldn't have SSE2 (says google).

Since SSE seems not to be the problem, what else could it be?

I get the same exception with the latest svn checkout of core and scipy 
as well as with the sources (core, scipy) from sourceforge.
