My 3-D needs are pretty trivial.
- Function illustrations in the classroom (and supporting
notes). For this gnuplot is really quite nice, however
gplt disabled its own plot_func function so this
functionality was missing from gplt. (And gplt did not
allow easy access to gnuplot for setting a variety of
global options, even though an easy workaround was
  possible for the gnuplot literate
  http://www.scipy.org/mailinglists/mailman?fn=scipy-user/2004-August/003062.html.)
- Scatter plots, with easy interactive axis rotation a plus.

fwiw,
Alan Isaac
