Not an answer to your question, but 's' is a pdb command:

ipdb> help s
s(tep)
Execute the current line, stop at the first possible occasion
(either in a function that is called or in the current function).

Use

print s

or the shorthand

p s

instead, so you actually print the local variable 's' instead of
executing the command 's'.
