Now I get

/usr/local/lib/python2.4/site-packages/scipy/io/mio.py in
savemat(filename, dict)
    857     for variable in dict.keys():
    858         var = dict[variable]
--> 859         if type(var) is not ArrayType:
    860             continue
    861         if var.dtype.char == 'S1':

NameError: global name 'ArrayType' is not defined
