Another possibilty: Mayavi2 (see http://code.enthought.com/mayavi2/
and http://www.scipy.org/Cookbook/MayaVi) is an excellent
visualisation package that includes a surface function
(http://www.scipy.org/Cookbook/MayaVi/Surf) and can be run from the
command-line in a manner similar to matplotlib.

I switched from IDL a couple of years ago, and have never looked back.
