Fred,
If you don't need to process the missing data are using a 1D array or an array 
that can be flattened, just use the `compressed()` method/function on your 
MaskedArray, and send the output to histogram, e.g.
numpy.histogram(your_masked_array.compressed())

If you need to keep track of the number of missing data, or qualify them as 
one particular category, just fill your masked array with a convenient value.
