Same thing with Mayavi's mlab (I look at 3D data). 

I modify in place the objects plotted, for speed. Check out
https://svn.enthought.com/enthought/browser/Mayavi/trunk/examples/mayavi/interactive/mlab_interactive_dialog.py
for some hints on how to do this.
