Work on ( I guess, never used it) Mac Osx 10.6 running python 2.6

In [7]: mt.loadmat('teste.mat')
/Library/Frameworks/EPD64.framework/Versions/6.1/lib/python2.6/site-packages/scipy/io/matlab/mio.py:99:
