I use h5py. I think it is great. It gives you a dictionary-like
interface to your archive. Here's a quick example:

>> import h5py
>> a = np.random.rand(1000,1000)
>> f = h5py.File('/tmp/myfile.hdf5')
>> f['a'] = a  # <-- Save
>> f.keys()
   ['a']
>> f.filename
   '/tmp/myfile.hdf5'
>> b = f['a']  # <-- Load
