No, a kernel embedded in a GUI app doesn't block, see the examples I
showed you.  Now, once users give some code for that kernel to execute
it does block until the code returns, but not otherwise.

You can also run the kernel in a background thread, if you want.  It's
a simple way of letting external codes connect to yours while
everything continues to run as before.
