Travis just gave you an explanation. Yes there was quite a bit of effort to
rationalize the methods and the functions, but that happened before 1.0 was
released. We now have a commitment to maintain API compatibility for the 1.0
series. That commitment doesn't go away because it is inconvenient for us or
because we missed an opportunity to rationalize the API more.
