 I did some further looking into this.  I do believe I have a working
 interface now.

 I made some tweaks to the pyf file and also discovered that one of the
 LAPACK routines
 was the culprit in producing the strange results for <s,d>neupd.  If you
 compile in your
 own version of <s,d>lahqr.f with suitable compiler options everything
 seems to work.

 e.g. -ffloat-store or
 my default with setup.py is
 /usr/bin/g77 -g -Wall -fno-second-underscore -fPIC -O3 -funroll-loops
 -march=pentium4 -mmmx -msse2 -msse -fomit-frame-pointer -malign-double

 I might throw in my own <c,z>laqhr.f as well to make sure...

 I agree that the ARPACK interface is complicated.
 I read again the f2py manual and I'm a little fuzzy over when I should use
 vs intent(inout) etc.

 I'll post my cleaned up code here when I get a chance.
