 Thanks very much for your quick action.

 I can report that
 1) iv & ivp seem to work as expected for complex arguments:

 from scipy.special import *
 from pylab import *

 x = arange(600, 800,1)
 for i in range(0,100):
  s = []
  for j in x:

 You can see it fails around 700, which is what
 I expect (same as in matlab)

 2) Using jv(n, complex(0, k)) seems to work for
 some orders but not all

 Thanks again for your help. I was *so glad* when
 I discovered scipy, because I was very reluctant
 to use matlab/octave, in my view, lousy programming
 languages. Python is so much better and with scipy
 I can do everything I need.
