 I've done bigger problems using numerical derivatives, but the devil is in
 the details. There may be a memory leak somewhere, not necessarily in the
 leastsq code. Can you try to pin things down a bit more? What happens if
 you don't supply the derivative? Also, five iterations for 36 GB is about
 7GB/iteration, which is pretty big compared to the size of the problem
 itself. What happens if you call your own Dfun and f(x) a couple of times?

 I think the mailing list would be a better place to start on this problem
 since you don't supply enough info and not everyone tracks the bug list.
