 FWIW, here's my take:
 I can see the value of adding and multiplying LinearOperators and think
 that functionality should be added.  Aside from those features, I would
 prefer to keep LinearOperator fairly minimalistic and would prefer that we
 not add special-purpose LinearOperators for operations like FFT, masking,
 differencing, etc.  I would support incorporating such examples into the
 LinearOperator documentation though.

 Minor quibble: Unless there's a compelling reason to use .dense I think we
 should use .todense() as the sparse matrices currently do.

 Anyway, thanks for leading this effort barbey.
