 OK, I'll bring back my first attempt to fix this, and implement the rule
 that Ralf suggests: the distance functions should handle "1-D-like"
 inputs.  One definition of "1-D-like" is squeeze(x).ndim == 1.

 (The broadcasting enhancement that I have in mind can be implemented
 later, and can be made backwards compatible by interpreting the None value
 of the new 'axis' keyword to mean the old ("1-D-like") behavior.)
