Yes, normally I do a fresh install of
everything (python, ipython, Numeric, f2py, scipy, wxPython, ...)

Hmm, I have been beaten by this a couple of times in the past ;-(
and I thought I learned my lesson now ;-).
If I remember correctly, this normally resulted in
a failure of some of the unittests. Presently
the unit tests run fine (apart from the two known errors).

I think it would be great, if there is a way to
check for this type of incompatibilities
automatically, eg when running
  python scipy_core/scipy_distutils/system_info.py

OK, tomorrow I will do a fresh checkout and report here.
