Check out checkinstall (http://asic-linux.com.mx/~izto/checkinstall/
<http://asic-linux.com.mx/%7Eizto/checkinstall/> )

It monitors installation from source and creates your choice of Debian
Slackware or rpm package for you. It makes it very easy to uninstall
programs that you install from source (or binaries).
