Sorry to hear about your troubles: in all honesty, it's a bit of bad luck with 
timing on your part.  You happen to be coming to it right in the middle of a 
MAJOR reorganization.  The entire codebase is being updated, old (broken) 
tools are being removed, new ones are falling in place, etc.

Trust me: things will stabilize soon and life will in fact be a lot easier 
than it used to be.  You just happened to jump right in the middle of the storm.

In the meantime, you can use the old scipy, but ignore gui_thread and the *plt 
plotting modules.  Instead, have a look at matplotlib for plotting and things 
should be OK.  Soon you'll be able to switch to the new system which should 
smooth out most of these rough edges.
