[SciPy-user] Strange fortran (g95) build error on Mac OS X - not finding fortran compiler

I'm running into a strange problem trying to build scipy-0.6.0 using
the g95-0.90 fortran compiler (from http://www.g95.org) on Mac OS X.
The build fails with:

building 'scipy.interpolate.dfitpack' extension
error: extension 'scipy.interpolate.dfitpack' has Fortran sources but
no Fortran compiler found

which is strange as earlier in the build process the fortran compiler
is found and fortran code is compiled without issue:

building 'specfun' library
compiling Fortran sources
Fortran f77 compiler: /opt/local/bin/g95 -Wall -ffixed-form
-fno-second-underscore -fPIC -O2 -funroll-loops
Fortran f90 compiler: /opt/local/bin/g95 -Wall -fno-second-underscore
-fPIC -O2 -funroll-loops
Fortran fix compiler: /opt/local/bin/g95 -Wall -ffixed-form
-fno-second-underscore -Wall -fno-second-underscore -fPIC -O2
creating build/temp.macosx-10.3-i386-2.5/scipy/special/specfun
compile options: '-c'
g95:f77: scipy/special/specfun/specfun.f

I'm building scipy using the following command

$ python setup.py config_fc --fcompiler gnu95 --f77exec
/opt/local/bin/g95 --f90exec /opt/local/bin/g95 build

If I use the gfortran compiler from gcc42 instead then the build
proceeds successfully, any idea why this problem is occurring with
