Thanks for helpful advice, everyone. I finally got it working yesterday. I decided to go with scipy 0.10b2, I always got into problems with 0.9.

For the record, scipy 0.10b2 failed some tests and hangs on one of them. That's why I remain somewhat skeptical with regard to its non-bugginess. Would it be of interest to share the test results? Recently I've become a big fan of cmake, and the same people have created cdash; maybe something similar should be set up for scipy? It would allow people to share test results and benchmarks more easily and systematically during development and beta/rc release. For example, LAPACK uses this system:
Probably several similar solutions exist out there.

I, for one, would be more inclined to run tests for my compiler/OS if I could simply 'git pull' and then run 'python setup.py test_with_upload'.
